Harris, Clare Winger

Away From the Here and Now: Stories in Pseudo-Science (Signed First Edition, Andrew J. Offutt's copy)

Philadelphia, PA: Dorrance & Co., 1947. First Edition, octavo hardcover lacking original dust jacket. Inscribed by the author in holograph ink on the front endpaper: From on [sic] science fiction fan to another / Clare Winger Harris / 12-25-50." From the estate of Andrew J. Offutt, with his rubber-stamp on the front endpaper. Offutt was an avid science fiction author noted for "Conan"-themed fantasies, debuted as a published writer in 1951, and wrote 100s of erotic novels pseudonymously as John Cleve, Turk Winter, John Denis, Jeff Moorehead, Opal Andrews, among others. The "Spaceways" series is perhaps his ultimate collaboration between science fiction and erotica. Most institutions without personal material. Harris (1891-68) was the first woman published in US science fiction/fantasy pulps, beginning with "A Runaway World" (Weird Tales, July 1926), the first story in this collected volume. Her stories generally feature strong women, notably working women, and her works are considered feminist precedents. Very Good; light corner bumps, brief soil and foxing.
