Bound in Leather [with The Taming of Donna] (Original erotic comics "keybook")

New York: Irving Klaw, 1960s. Original "keybook" of adult erotic comics, circa early 1960s, illustrated by Stanton and produced by Klaw. Primitively bound in thick brown boards, pebbled maroon vellum spine, 30 single-weight glossy plates mounted on pebbled paper with glossy versos, each plate a chapter, and a blank front endpaper with "15" in red pencil. Akin to a film still keybook, produced primarily as in-house reference proofs (title was later published as a digest magazine, and by Belier Press in 1977), or for presentation copies sent to A-list subscribers and to friends, like noted science-fiction/fantasy writer and erotica colleague, Andrew J. Offutt, who worked with Stanton on "Blunder Broad" and "Stantoons," series stories that saturated the market. Stanton and Klaw operated semi-successful mail-order businesses both together and independently, with subscription services for adults-only erotic comics, magazines, novelties, and photos. Here, Klaw's love for shiny fabrics and Stanton's high-contrast artistry culminate in an prototype graphic novel about maids and female domination, elaborate shackling and oral devices, masks, and dexterous subordinates, astoundingly without nudity. Also included is a original set of 28 similar plates, this time smaller and unbound, Stanton-produced and illustrated erotic comics, a disjointed set including pages 1-20 of a "Sweeter Gwen" title, and scattered pages from "The Taming of Donna" and an unknown title featuring a male character who receives a fair share of discipline via flagellation and clamping. One is tempted to have the loose set bound to match. Later editions of most are held institutionally, otherwise these titles uncollected. Keybook 8 x 10.75 inches, plates 8 x 9.75 inches, b/w, and unbound sheets about 5 x 7 inches, b/w, all rectos only. Very Good Plus overall, moderate curling and toning, keybook with some spine separation. Scarce New York underground press of the Civil Rights and Kennedy years, for consenting, mature audiences.
