Greek dancer Nicholas Tsoukalas, with female partners (Two Original photographs, circa 1920s, one Signed)
Chicago, IL: Celebrity, Daguerre, Circa 1920s. Two vintage B/W photographs of Greek (or Hungarian) dancer & teacher, Nicholas Tsoukalas, shown posing w/ dance partners, one featuring costumes of jester & showgirls (by Celebrity), the other showing Tsoukalas & partner in more traditional ballet theatre attire (by Daguerre); that photograph is SIGNED by Tsoukalas in holograph ink: To Georgina, with Best Wishes / Nicholas Tsoukalas, June 1925."
Tsoukalas was a prominent Chicago dancer who opened his own dance studio, & he taught presumably for a few years; not much is available biographically, however. He published dance instructional booklets, notably on Spanish styles, a later instructional on jazz (c. 1962), & in 1935 he was a guest judge for the Greek Beauty Queen of Chicago pageant. The Delta Museum in British Columbia holds a small collection from Nicholas Tsoukalas, or Tsoukalis, a Greek fisherman who moved to Canada in the early 1900s & fished the Fraser River until his death in 1972. I presume dancer Tsoukalas did move back to Canada at some point before his death to live the rest of his days fishing.
Both photos 8 x 10 inches, double-weight, semi-gloss recto silver gelatin. Both w/ moderate toning. Celebrity "jester" photo landscape orientation, Daguerre "traditional" portrait orientation. Celebrity: corner crease & small chip, slightly wavy. Daguerre: small rubs over to the inscription (recipient's name, date), otherwise attractive. A nice pair. [Photographs]
