Young Adonis (Vintage adult magazine, first issue, 1963)
Hollywood, CA: Young Adonis, 1963. V1N1, March 1963 (stated Feb 63 on p3), premiere issue. 67pp, B/W/Color throughout, saddle-stapled; distributed by Kable News. Vintage adult magazine emphasizing seminude male models in glistening, rippling form, outdoors, biker fashion, sailors, banana hammocks. Published/photographed by Bob Mizer, w/ guest photographers throughout, this was Mizer's first foray into full-color, standard-size magazine format. Mizer's earlier "Physique Pictorial" magazine was the first openly erotic magazine aimed at advancing the status quo of the American gay male, beginning as a "study" periodical in 1951, ending as softcore in 1990. Collages of advertisements, images, body measurements litter each page from front to back, start to finish. Mizer published his "Physique Pictorial" for 40 years, erecting a definitive monument in homosexuality & mass media. "Young Adonis" continued the tradition after PP, even including wallet photos on the rear panel, w/ gridlines for excising.
Dennis Cole, David Mineric (iconic "Tom of Finland" features), Barry Sanders, Mark Nixon, Fred Wiggins, Arnie Payne, Mike Patterson (front panel) by Parr of Arizona, Jerry Armstrong, Will Marks, Jim Schola, Spike Adams & Bob Page wrestling, Dick DuBois, Ron Howard, E.C. Brown, Keith Zigler. Models in full-color: Helmut Reidmeir, Forbes Wood, Mark Nixon, Klaus Struhlik, Franz Viel, and "wallet" photos (rear panel), AMG (Athletic Model Guild) film ads.
